The Grand Mosque, the holiest site in Islam and a major destination for millions of Muslim worshippers, has significantly enhanced its emergency preparedness with the installation of 15 automated external defibrillators (AEDs). These medical devices play a crucial role in responding to cardiac emergencies, potentially saving lives in critical moments.
Last year alone, the AEDs successfully intervened in 19 cardiac arrest cases, demonstrating their vital role in ensuring the well-being of pilgrims and visitors. Strategically placed throughout the sprawling mosque complex, the devices are readily accessible at key locations:
- Five units are positioned at the main gates.
- Five more are stationed near the mataf, the circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba.
- An additional five are located in the Third Extension of the mosque.
AEDs are essential medical devices designed to deliver an electric shock to restore the heart’s normal rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. Their user-friendly design allows for prompt intervention even by individuals without a medical background.
This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s recent efforts to enhance the Umrah experience. With a record-breaking 13.5 million Umrah pilgrims in 2021, ensuring their safety and well-being remains a top priority. The Saudi authorities have implemented several measures to improve accessibility and convenience, including:
- Extending the Umrah visa validity from 30 to 90 days.
- Permitting entry through all land, air, and sea ports.
- Enabling citizens to invite foreign friends for Umrah visits.
- Lifting the male guardian requirement for women pilgrims.
- Expanding tourist visa eligibility for GCC residents to include Umrah participation.
By prioritizing pilgrim safety and implementing innovative solutions like the widespread deployment of medical devices, Saudi Arabia reinforces its commitment to providing a seamless and secure Umrah experience for Muslims worldwide.
