Israel threatens to break connections with satellite company, claims Hamas will make use of connectivity to carry out terrorist attacks, and suggests Musk to condition it on the release of hostages
Millionaire Elon Musk on Saturday said that his Starlink satellite service will provide internet connectivity to “internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza,” who are experiencing a blackout in telecommunications since Friday.
Starlink is an orbital satellite network located in low Earth orbit. They provides internet connectivity to remote locations or regions that have normal communications infrastructure scuttled.
Musk who is the owner of Starlink operator SpaceX was responding to a blog post written posted by US Democrat congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who called the blackout of communications that has been imposed in Gaza “unacceptable.”
“Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza,” Musk wrote on X the site, which was previously Twitter which he also owns.
The Communications Minister of Israel Shlomo Karhi has threatened to cut off communication with Starlink in the event that Musk continues to pursue. With X, Karhi tweeted: “Israel will use every means available to stop this.
“HAMAS will utilize it for terrorist attacks. There’s no doubt about that We are aware of it and Musk is aware of that. HAMAS is ISIS. Maybe Musk is willing to make it conditional upon an end to our kidnapped infants or sons, daughters, old people. Every single one of them!”
“By then, my office will cut any ties with Starlink,” he added.
Responding to Musk’s proposal The Director of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated: “We could really benefit from Starlink to be able to get into contact with our employees as well as hospitals in Gaza. What are we doing to get it done?”
