The Essence of Islam

The very phrase “Islam” is derived from the Arabic root “s-l-m,” because of this peace, submission, and safety. Islam indicates complete submission to the will of Allah (God), and thru this submission, one attains internal peace and works closer to developing peace in society. It is critical to observe that peace is on the coronary heart of the Islamic message, as evidenced by using the common greeting of Muslims: As-Salamu Alaikum—“Peace be upon you.” This greeting encapsulates the spirit of goodwill, harmony, and compassion that Islam encourages among human beings.

The Qur’an, which Muslims regard as the very last and divine revelation, repeatedly emphasizes the cost of peace. In Surah Al-Anfal, for instance, Allah instructions:

۞ وَإِن جَنَحُوا۟ لِلسَّلْمِ فَٱجْنَحْ لَهَا وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٦١

If the enemy is inclined towards peace, make peace with them. And put your trust in Allah. Indeed, He ˹alone˺ is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

This verse genuinely highlights Islam’s choice for peace over conflict and its emphasis on mutual information.

O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives. Be they rich or poor, Allah is best to ensure their interests. So do not let your desires cause you to deviate ˹from justice˺.
