DUBAI: The UN World Food Programme recently disclosed that The Weeknd, the Canadian singer recognized as Abel Tesfaye, has generously contributed $2.5 million from his XO Humanitarian Fund to bolster WFP’s humanitarian initiatives in Gaza.
This substantial donation, equivalent to 4 million emergency meals, is slated to finance 820 tons of food parcels, capable of sustaining over 173,000 Palestinians for a span of two weeks, as outlined by the organization.
Corinne Fleischer, WFP’s director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe, emphasized the urgent need for escalated efforts due to the humanitarian crisis stemming from the conflict. Fleischer stated, “This conflict has unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe beyond reckoning. WFP is working round the clock to provide aid in Gaza but a major scale-up is needed to address the desperate level of hunger we are seeing.”
Expressing gratitude for Abel’s significant contribution, Fleischer added, “We thank Abel for this valuable contribution towards the people of Palestine. We hope others will follow Abel’s example and support our efforts.”
Recognized as a multi-platinum global recording artist, The Weeknd was appointed as a goodwill ambassador in October 2021, marking a pivotal moment in his humanitarian involvement.
